Poems

Needs Doing

I’ve stood on the shores of time

and watched as the waves rolled in

one

behind another.

Over a lifetime,

I’ve seen the ebb

and flow.

The come

and go.

Watched language turn in

and back on itself

Through vortices of ideals,

theory

and rhetoric

Bemused, I find myself tonight

contemplating the phrase

“We are a Nation of laws.”

Oh How that meaning’s changed!

From right wing radical

to progressive idealist

Spinning like a top

through the hours

days

years

Until we find ourselves…

Here!

Where it seems,

no law

has quite the power enough

to do

what it is

needs doing.
